WHAT TO EXPECT
Our midwives work privately, or independently of the NHS, but are fully trained. Most of our midwives either work, or have worked in the NHS.
When you make contact with one of our midwives, first you will be offered a free consultation, either by phone or face to face (preferable). This is so we can meet and discuss your ideas, plans and ‘ideals’ surrounding your journey to parenthood.
It also helps us to gage whether we are the right personalities to work with each other – not everyone suits everyone! Its important to work with someone you feel comfortable and confident with as this is going to be an emotional, sacred time.
If you and your midwife agree to work together, following this meeting, we will plan your care schedule around packages discussed – times and dates are arranged at convenient times and we even come to you at home! You also get a set of personalised maternity notes – which you receive a copy of to keep at the end of your journey.
And the best part is the continuity – your midwife really gets to know you, and you her! There’s no re-telling your stories/concerns/plans to a different person every other appointment. Our midwives can support you through your screening options, consultants appointments (should they be required), birth plans and discuss any worries/concerns you may have. You will be directed to resources that are evidence based when considering choices for your care which we can discuss further. You can run your care along side the NHS, or just have care with your our midwives, the decision is yours.
Many people opt for a home birth, however, but we are also able to support you if you require a birth in the hospital. Our role changes slightly – we are there more in a ‘professional birth partner’ role to support you and your birth partner in a hospital setting. This can be very beneficial as we are there as your advocates, and can discuss your preferences on your behalf if you wish – or simply just be there for extra support.
Following birth, we can continue to visit you at home. Schedules vary dependent on the midwife you see, but you are generally seen for 4-6 weeks after the birth. You of course have the option to extend this support if circumstances require, as we want you to have the best care and experience possible.
In the postnatal period we will sign post you to local groups for both mum and baby, support you with your feeding choices, and just make sure that your healing, emotionally as well as physically.
Our goal as independent midwives is simply to help you release the power that you already have inside, so you can have a confident, positive journey – even if the road takes a detour!
WHAT’S THE BUZZ
Can’t explain how amazing Sarah is. From the first point of contact through to the last, her level of care is fantastic, putting my wife and I at ease. Having had a home birth with our first child, we wanted the reassurance for our second (which we sadly didn’t feel with our local NHS service). Sarah made the whole experience feel special and safe.
It was at this point that we found Sally and our complete pregnancy experience changed for the better! She came for a booking consultation and we both immediately warmed to her. She listened to our story and talked through the service she could provide us with. When Sally nipped to the loo, (sorry Sally!) my hubby and I looked knowingly at each other and both said ‘she’s fab, lets book now!’ From that moment on everything went brilliantly and it’s all due to Sally’s care.
When I became pregnant with my second child I was determined to have a completely different labour. I’d asked Lynsey to be one of my birthing partners and having agreed, she told me about hypno-birthing and we had a session during my pregnancy, I’d never felt so relaxed. Lynsey’s voice, guiding me through every step of the way. I remember panicking at one point but just listened out for Lynsey to guide me and it worked. My Son arrived 6 hours later in the birthing pool with only gas and air. A perfect labour for me. A big thank you to Lynsey for all your help, support and guidance, I really couldn’t have done it without you.
