A big hello from MummaBaby Space!! I am Sam and I am currently a mentored post natal doula.
After being my sisters birthing partner for her third baby, I realised what a special and beautiful role doulas had to play as every woman navigates the journey to becoming a mother. It is such a special and personal time in a woman's life and a huge privilege to be cheering momma's corner!
MummaBaby Space supports women in their own space, helping them to empower their own recovery, giving them precious time to just be. Women in this day and age can put so much pressure on themselves to heal and get back to 'normal' after having a baby. With a post natal doula, a woman can cherish the fourth trimester, making it a time for bonding, hibernating and healing, while being nurtured and nourished as she gets to know her new family.
After three breast cancer diagnosis from the age of 27, life has certainly been a roller coaster, but I have learnt so much about myself and the benefits of self care through this time.
Becoming a mummy after a diagnosis and having a baby girl, then toddler, through two further diagnosis, made me acutely aware that there was no specific support for women who had been affected by cancer or chronic illness before, during or post pregnancy. By becoming a post natal doula I wanted to support other women in those early days and at any time through the first year, but also specialise in this area.
The far reaching side affects of a diagnosis or treatment can add another level of anxiety to an already intense time of adjustment. After having to have a hysterectomy, as pro active prevention, I understand the heartache of secondary infertility. I appreciate the darkness that can descend when faced with post natal mental health conditions. I can empathise with the crippling fatigue, the lack of control and energy and the sheer overwhelm. I can sympathise with breast feeding ups and downs and I know the joy of being blessed with a child but the despair of feeling unwell and needing time to heal.
As well as MummaBaby space, seven years ago I set up a survivor support group called Samspaces, supporting women as they adjust to life again after cancer. I feel strongly about helping women find the tools to support their own wellbeing and self care, putting it higher up the priority list after illness and after having a baby.
In addition to this quarterly support group, I will also be collaborating with Younique post natal to co-host monthly support groups for mothers across the board in the Guildford, Godalming and Farnham areas of Surrey.
It is an honour to support women as they adjust to motherhood and embrace an incredible new phase of womanhood. Every woman I have the privilege to work with will teach me something invaluable and is an amazing Mumma, taking a special space to thrive and grow. I am loving every minute of the journey.
